CHUKWUEMEKA ODUMEGWU OJUKWU'S DEMISE
27-11-2011
Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the Ikemba Nnewi is dead aged 78. He died in the early hours of yesterday in London hospital after a long battle with stroke. He was the former chairman and the presidential candidate of APGA the political party he founded. However he would be remembered more as an ex Biafran warlord after he led the igbos to secceed from Nigeria in 1967. His action led to a civil war that lasted 30 months. having lost the war, he fled to then Ivory Coast where he lived for more than a decade until former president Sheu Shagari's administration gave him a pardon in 1983.
Chief Ojukwu was born into a rich family and so had the best education possible. He was probably the first Nigerian graduate to join the army and this earned rapid rise in the military. He was a Lieutanant Colnel before he triggered the war.
In fairness to the Ikemba Nnewi, he was a fortright person and an erudite scholar. He was very fluient in English and communicated very well. He was the author of 'Because I am Involved' in which he described his ex beauty queen wie, Bianca, as very beautiful, and late Chief Obafemi Awolowo as the best president Nigeria never had. Chief Ojukwu was a man of peace. He did not dither to integrate himselve into the civil society after he came back from exile.
He would be misssed by all.

Ojukwu’s death, a reminder of Nigeria’s unfinished business.
Ojukwu’s death once again reminds all of us of the unfinished business of Nigerian federalism. If only for his memory, and to ensure that Nigeria never has to suffer again any crisis like the civil war, we must all rise as a people to fix Nigeria’s special challenges. That is why Nigeria must, as a matter of urgency convoke a sovereign national conference, where all these issues would be resolved” He was a revolutionary, almost from the womb.

“Here unfortunately is the end of an era. An era when men were men, who leaved and fought for what they believed in and were ready to pay the supreme sacrifice for their believe. Ikemba was a leader made in this mould”

“Chief Odimegwu-Ojukwu was a man of principle, a great Nigerian who remained dedicated to his convictions until death. Even when he was forced by the circumstances of his day to lead his people into a war, and later went into exile, he returned to the country after a national pardon to join other Nigerians in a broad political platform for nation-building.”
