NATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION CALLS FOR DILIGENT PROSECUTION OF DPO SEGUN FABUNMI
ABUJA, 11 JANUARY, 2012. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) welcomes the steps so far taken by Police authorities and the Lagos State Government to prosecute the DPO, Pen Cinema, Agege, Mr. Segun Fabunmi, and directed the Commission’s Zonal Coordinator South West Zone, Mrs. Mausi Segun to hold watching brief over the matter.
The said Fabunmi, accused of killing one Mr. Ademola Aderinde during protests in Lagos on Monday was arrested and handed to the CID for prosecution.
Speedy and fair trial of DPO Fabunmi is however necessary in order to send a clear message, to all security personnel, against the use of excessive force during peaceful protests and other civil operations. The NHRC believes that diligent prosecution of the police officer will promote the spirit of accountability and professionalism and discourage impunity in the Police Service.
The NHRC also commends the relatively orderly and peaceful conduct of protesters and the maturity exhibited by security agencies, on the 2nd day of nationwide protests and urged all parties involved to sustain this level of responsibility and professionalism.
The Commission observed that the violent conduct of some miscreants who infiltrated the protesters and the resultant disproportionate use of force, reported in some parts of the country had reduced on the 2nd day, giving way for constructive engagement between the civil society groups and security agencies.
The general conduct and attitude of civil society groups has also mitigated security concerns associated with the nationwide strike action. In Kaduna and Benin the civil society groups suspended processions and adopted a stay-at-home strategy in order to avoid open confrontation with security agencies. This is a commendable step which promotes dialogue and amicable resolution of the issues by all parties involved.
