Who is Queen Salawa?
Salawa Abeni: This highly talented musician was born on May 5, 1961. She started her music career very early in life at the age of 8 while still in primary school. Her music genre is Waka which she sings in Yoruba language. Her debut album titled The Late Murtala Muhammed in which she paid tribute to the assasinated Nigeria's Head of State General Murtala Muhammed was released in 1976 while she was just 16 years old. The album proved an instant hit selling over one million copies - the first female artist in Nigeria to perform such a feat.The album was recorded under Leader label so also her subsequent albums until she walked out of a relationship with the label's owner. She later married a Fuji musician Kollington Ayinla and joined his record label.

Salawa Abeni was crowned 'Queen of Waka' by the Alaafin of Oyo in 1992. Todate, she has about 15 albums to her credit. As a human being Queen Salawa has had her low moments but as a devout muslim she has remained strong through out all of these. So far it has been a blissful musical career.
