PRESS STATEMENT
Against the dispersal of Occupy Abuja
Socialist Workers League categorically condemns the attack and dispersal of youths under the aegis of Occupy Nigeria/Abuja, in the early hours of today, by the Nigeria Police Force, with the aid of agent provocateurs.
The youths who have peacefully occupied the sidewalk close to the Eagle Square for the past four days in pursuit of a better country have demonstrated much more patriotism and readiness to sacrifice for the commonwealth the country is, than many an elected or appointed politician "leader". To treat them thus, is a slap on our collective integrity and morality.
A pattern is here emerging. It was in a similar manner that men of the Police Force attacked protesters at Kano last week. The NLC headquarters was equally attacked by armed thugs of the state last Friday. This barbaric attempts at intimidation of citizens and efforts at expanding the democratic space MUST STOP!
The introduction of an agent provocateur and the stealing of the youths phones, laptops and ipads is not only politically wrong, but is indeed criminal. SWL calls for the prosecution of the police officers responsible for these despicable acts and call for the unconditional respect of the youths’ right to dissent.

National Chairperson
